OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G Review

OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G Review

When it comes to value-for-money devices, you should stay away from the OPPO but if you want a good-looking smartphone and are willing to pay a premium for it then the newly launched OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G could be a good option to consider.

The OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G is priced at Rs 45,999 for 12GB of Ram and 256GB storage while the device is available in Glazed Black and Glazed Green color options and its sold via Flipkart.

OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G Review

No, OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G is not worth buying because OPPO is charging way more money for what they’re offering, we have options like Redmi K50i 5G and even RealMe GT Neo 3 5G which are available at lower prices and still, they offer real value for the price that they’re charging.

There is no doubt that the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max is a powerful processor but it doesn’t worth the 46k price tag. The fact that we have phones with the same processor at even 26k makes it a bit difficult to consider Reno 8 Pro 5G at 46k.

Still, one can argue that the phone has a solid build and it looks great in the hands and if that’s the case, then one should consider the Reno 8 Pro 5G but they also need to keep in mind that, they’re paying a premium for design and not for the specs.

Fyi, OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G and OnePlus 10R 5G (80W) look similar but in some areas, the OnePlus 10R 5G has better specs and it’s also available at a lower price. Whether OPPO wants to call it or not, its re-brand of OnePlus 10R 5G with a different design.

By the way, looks, design, and even the build consider the Nothing Phone (1).

Now, that doesn’t mean, OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G is a bad smartphone, it’s just that, OPPO is charging a bit extra money.

Display

The OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G comes with a 6.70-inches 120Hz AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and picks the brightness of 950 nits and its 10-bit panel with HDR10+ support.

Even though the device has HDR10+ support, I didn’t see an HDR tag on Netflix or even on Prime video but it does have Widevine L1 support which means, it supports FHD+ content on OTT platforms.

There is also an in-display fingerprint sensor that works fine without any kind of problems.

By the way, it only has a 120hz touch sampling rate which is kind of odd because this is a 46k smartphone, so even 360Hz would have been a soft spot.

The display is bright too, there won’t be any issues while using it outdoors.

Overall, for the price of Rs 46000, there is nothing much to complain about the display panel.

Performance

The MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Max is a new processor from MediaTek and it will give a close performance to Snapdragon 888 SoC, so don’t worry about the performance.

Before we talk about the performance let me share one thing,

Qualcomm Charges a premium for their processor whereas Mediatek doesn’t change as much as Qualcomm, so here, I don’t know why OPPO is charging a premium.

Coming to the performance,

OPPO has also added 12 5G bands, so whenever 5G launches in India, you will be able to use the 5G network.

The phone runs on ColorOS 12.1-based on Android 12, OPPO didn’t promise anything about the future update but going by the OPPO record, the phone should get the Android 13 update.

For gamers, read this carefully,

Most of the mobile game developers optimized their games for Qualcomm processors which we have seen in the past but this time, it’s a bit different because OPPO has partnered with BGMI.

So yes, you will be able to play BGMI at 90hz and other games at 60hz.

By the way, there won’t be any kind of problems in day-to-day life, the chipset is powerful enough to handle almost all the tasks but for gaming too, OPPO has done enough after partnering with BGMI.

Can’t say much about all the mobile games…

Cameras

OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G comes with a 50MP primary sensor + an 8MP ultra-wide lens + a 2MP macro sensor while there is a 16MP selfie shooter on the front. The rear cameras can shoot videos at 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps while the front can shoot at only 1080p@30fps.

So OPPO wanted to use the MariSilicon X, so they didn’t add the OIS support.

Earlier, when you take any images, first they go through an image sensor, and after that, you see the final image on the screen but with the MariSilicon X,

When you take an image, it will go through an image sensor & MariSilicon X and it will optimize the image or video and then you will see the final results.

Now, on paper, it looks amazing but it’s not as good as OIS…

But why does OPPO wants to do that, the reason is, that they will have more control over the cameras, and as MariSilicon X is owned by OPPO, they don’t have to pay money to anyone else.

Now when you shoot videos at 4k@30fps, the videos don’t come out stable, it’s useable but it doesn’t feel natural. So if you want useable videos that look good then always use the 1080p@60fps.

By the way, I didn’t notice any kind of issue with the dynamic range.

OPPO does saturate the colors a little but that’s their thing, so won’t comment on it.

For example, if you’re taking an image of the sky then you won’t get the same image, OPPO will add extra blue color.

Under good lighting, the 50MP sensor captures a good image but when there is low light or taking images at night, the sensor doesn’t provide good images, it loses out on details and there is a lot of noise in images too.

I don’t think most of the users will complain about the saturated colors because as we have seen in the MKBHD blind camera test, people love the extra bright and punchier colors compared to natural ones.

Also that 8MP ultra-wide needs a little bit of improvement because, under low light, the sensor doesn’t provide good details. By the way, I feel as this is a 40k smartphone, OPPO should have gone with 16MP ultra-wide lens because the ultra-wide lens capture a wide range of area, so it’s better to have a bigger sensor rather than a smaller sensor.

We’re leaving in 2022 and yet, mobile brands are giving 2MP sensors, so they can say, our smartphone has a triple & quad-camera setup. So yes, don’t expect anything from that 2MP macro sensor, it’s added, so the phone can look good, it doesn’t have any use case.

For some reason, the 32MP front camera takes better images than the rear cameras,

In short, if you love to take selfies then this could be the ideal phone for you. Don’t count much on rear cameras.

Overall, considering the price and the cameras, the OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G doesn’t have the best cameras under Rs 50000 in India. Now, this says a lot as OPPO is marketing this device as a camera-centric smartphone.

This is all because of the price tag, nothing wrong with the cameras…

Audio

The OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G comes with dual speakers and they’re also good too. Again, you will be more than happy with its quality.

The device has 2 × 2MIMO Carrier aggregation and two microphones, so there won’t be any issue with calling…

For those who are wondering, no the OPPO Reno 8 Peo 5G doesn’t have the 3.5mm audio jack or even a micro-SD card slot.

Battery

The OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G comes with a 4,500 mAh battery with 80W wired fast charging support which will charge the device from 1% to 100% in 28 Minutes.

Just like everything else, the battery life depends on user by user.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max is a battery-efficient processor which means the battery will last for a day. Also, that 80W fast charging helps a lot but keep in mind, always keep that charge and cable with you, other chargers won’t able to charge the Reno 8 Pro 5G at 80W.
