OPPO Reno 8 5G Review with Pros and Cons – Big Problems?

OPPO Reno 8 5G Review

OPPO Reno 8 5G Review

There is no doubt that OPPO launches phones at a premium price. That said, we have a new smartphone from OPPO under Reno Series and this too is pricey compared to its competition…

Fyi, the OPPO Reno 8 5G is a re-brand of the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G.

The OPPO Reno 8 5G is priced at Rs 29,999 for 8GB of Ram and 128GB storage while it’s available in Shimmer Black and Shimmer Gold color options and it will go for sale from 22nd July 2022 via Flipkart at noon.

So let’s find out in this review who should buy this device or who shouldn’t.

OPPO Reno 8 5G Review

No, the OPPO Reno 8 5G is not worth buying because we have phones like IQOO Neo 6 5G, Moto Edge 30 5G, and many other that offers real value at a good price, so it doesn’t make any sense to pay a premium for Reno 8 5G, just because it comes from OPPO.

Highlighting part of this smartphone is its cameras & design,

The phone does look great but again, OPPO has a used plastic frame, in short, it looks great but when you hold it in your hands, that premium feeling will go away…

That triple-camera setup is good but again, the cameras are not extraordinary, they’re decent at a premium price.

Overall, considering the price and specs, the OPPO Reno 8 5G doesn’t offer value but it’s a decent smartphone for those users who wanted to buy only an OPPO smartphone.

Pro tip: Don’t buy OPPO phones online because you will get big discounts when you buy from local stores…

Display

The Reno 8 5G comes with a 6.43-inches 90Hz AMOLED display with 1080 x 2400 pixels and 430 typical brightness. The front and back are protected with corning gorilla glass 5 while the frame is made out of plastic.

It also has an optical in-display fingerprint sensor and even Widevine L1 support for FHD+ streaming. Also, it has a 90hz screen refresh rate which is another cost-cutting.

When it comes to design, the device looks amazing from the back when you flip the phone, you will see the big bottom chin. Now, OPPO could have made that chin smaller but they also want to sell the Reno 8 Pro 5G.

In short, if you want a smaller bottom chin on the front then you have to pay Rs 45,999 for OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G.

Now, if you want the best design and you don’t play heavy games then just go with Nothing Phone (1).

By the way, Reno 8 5G has decent brightness, so there won’t be any issues while using the device outdoors.

Overall, OPPO should have provided an aluminum frame and a smaller chin. In short, this can’t be called the best display or build, it average panel with a good rear design.

Performance

We have recently seen the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 in OnePlus Nord 2T (review) and this phone also runs on ColorOS (technically),

I know, it says OxygenOS but most of the features and the core is from ColorOS. Fun fact, as of now, OnePlus doesn’t add bloatware while OPPO adds tons of…

Coming back to the Reno 8 5G,

The MediaTek Dimensity 1300 is a powerful processor and there won’t be any kind of problem while playing games or using a smartphones day to day life.

The phone also has 12 5G bands which means whenever 5G launches in India, the phone will be able to take advantage.

By the way, the device runs on ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12 and there are no words from OPPO for future updates but you can expect Android 13.

I have already told you that, the ColorOS comes with tons of pre-installed apps which you can uninstall but still, it is there even after paying Rs 29999.

Also, you will be able to disable the ads from the setting menu but some users have experienced the ads even after disabling the ads.

Overall, there won’t be any kind of problems while playing games but the OS is full of bloatware and you will see ads here and there…

Cameras

I have to tell you this,

OnePlus Nord 2T 5G and OPPO Reno 8 5G have the same camera setup but Nord 2T 5G has OIS while Reno 8 5G doesn’t…

The OPPO Reno 8 5G features Sony IMX 766 50MP primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide, and 2MP macro sensor while on the front we have a 32MP selfie shooter. The rear camera can record video up to 4k@30fps while the front can shoot up to 1080p@30fps.

The device doesn’t have OIS support, it relies on EIS which doesn’t work the best. So don’t expect a smooth video recording.

Now, just like every other OPPO smartphone, the colors come out a bit saturated. So if you’re using an OPPO smartphone then you won’t see the difference but if you’re coming from Google or Samsung smartphones then you will see the difference.

As this is a 30k smartphone, OPPO should have provided the OIS but they didn’t because this is OPPO, so can’t expect everything.

By the way, the 50MP sensor takes some good images under good lighting. It also has a dedicated night mode which works fine, nothing new…

Talking about 8MP ultra-wide lens, here I feel, the ultra-wide lens is just another addon like a 2MP sensor. The images come out with good dynamic range but most of the time, images turned out to be soft.

If you throw a good amount of light then, the ultra-wide lens will give good images but when there is no light or a little bit of light then the images won’t give you that 30k smartphone vibe.

In case you don’t like the images then try out Gcam whenever it’s available because the Reno 8 5G does have support for camera2api.

So yes, that 1.9 aperture does help a lot under the low light condition but keep in mind, don’t use the ultra-wide lens at night, always use a 50MP primary sensor because this lens has a 1.9 aperture which lets more light into the lens.

For some reason, the 32MP front camera takes better images than the rear cameras,

In short, if you love to take selfies then this could be the ideal phone for you. Don’t count much on rear cameras.

Overall, for the price of Rs 29999, the Reno 8 5G doesn’t have the best camera, it’s a decent camera with a good selfie shooter.

Audio

You expected dual speakers right but guess what, it only has a single bottom speaker which works fine. Now, of course, OPPO should have gone with a dual speaker but they wanted more profit, so they went with a single speaker.

The device has 2 × 2MIMO Carrier aggregation and two microphones, so there won’t be any issue with calling…

For those who are wondering, no the OPPO Reno 8 5G doesn’t have the 3.5mm audio jack or even a micro-SD card slot.

Battery

The OPPO Reno 8 5G comes with a 4,500 mAh battery with 80W wired fast charging support which will charge the device from 1% to 100% in 28 Minutes.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1300 is a battery-efficient processor which means the battery will last for a day.

Also, that 80W fast charging helps a lot but keep in mind, always keep that charge and cable with you, other chargers won’t able to charge the Reno 8 5G at 80W.
