Vivo V20 Pro 5G Review with Pros and Cons

Vivo V20 Pro 5G Review

As the name suggests, this is 5G smartphone and it’s available at Rs 29,999 in India for 8GB of Ram and 128GB storage. The phone has the same processor as OnePlus Nord but Vivo V20 Pro 5G is a bit expensive then Nord yet both of these phones are totally different from each other. So let’s review the Vivo V20 Pro 5G and find out whether you should buy this phone or not?

Display Quality

Display Size6.40-inch FHD+ AMOLED display
Resolutions1080 x 2400 pixels resolution
Screen Refresh Rate60Hz refresh rate

I know, what you will say, this design is from 2019 but it’s not, this is a 2020 smartphone with the dual selfie camera setup. Vivo should have gone with dual punch cut-out like OnePlus Nord but they just went with display notch which doesn’t look great from any angles.

The phone has 6.40-inches FHD+ AMOLED with 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution and it has 60hz screen refresh rate which doesn’t make any sense because this is 30k smartphone.

Good thing is, it has an AMOLED display rather than an LCD display. Also, Vivo didn’t mention which kind of glass they have used to protect the front side.

The phone also has support for widevine L1 support that means you can stream FHD+ videos on Netflix or on any other OTT platforms.

If we put everything aside and just take look at display quality then I would say, Vivo has done a good job with display, there won’t be any problem while watching movies, playing games. The phone can also be used outside and the display will be visible, overall, there is nothing to worry about display quality.

Design and Build Quality

BuildGlass front, Glass back, plastic frame

The design depends on a user by user, some will like it and some will hate it. If I talk about my self, the rear side looks amazing, I mean, that Rambo gradient makes everything perfect. Thing changes when we flip the Vivo V20 Pro 5G, the phone has display notch which has dual selfie cameras.

This is December 2020 and yet, Vivo decided to use that huge display notch. Also, the phone doesn’t have the 3.5mm audio jack which is also bummer.

As I have said, Vivo didn’t mention which kind of glass they have used to protect the front side but on the rear side, Vivo has used Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and there is a plastic frame which is okay because no other mobile brands are providing metal frame at the budget price tag.

Overall, Vivo V20 Pro 5G does look great in hand, there won’t any problem in build quality or in design but it also depends on you whether you’re okay with that notch or not because you will pay 30k for Vivo V20 Pro 5G. Performance or Cameras are not the only things to consider because you will see the screen every day.

Cameras

Camera (Rear)64 MP Primary Sensor
8 MP Ultra-Wide Lens
2 MP Depth
Video Recording (Rear)4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps
Camera (Front)44MP + 8MP Selfie Shooter
Video Recording (Front)4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps

Vivo V20 Pro 5G comes with triple rear camera setup featuring 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor + 8MP Ultra-wide lens + 2MP depth sensor while there is dual 44MP + 8MP front camera setup. As everyone knows, Vivo is known for selfie cameras and this is what Vivo has done with Vivo V20 Pro 5G.

The phone has the best selfie camera setup, also, it has an ultra-wide sensor on the front side too which will be helpful to take group photos. That 44MP primary selfie camera gives perfect image quality, so if you’re selfie lover then Vivo V20 Pro 5G will make your day.

Also, 44MP sensor gives more details, sometimes it doesn’t feel like a front camera. If you see the images very closely, Vivo has optimized the camera sensor very well which can be seen in the image quality. By the way, the front camera can shoot videos up to 4k@30fps which is a great thing for those who want to shoot vlogs fou YouTube.

Talking about rear cameras, let’s not talk about 2MP depth sensor because that’s just an add-on sensor. The phone has 64MP primary Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor, Vivo might have gone with 64MP Sony sensor never the less, this sensor is also good.

I was surprised by the image quality because Vivo doesn’t launch a budget smartphone with a good camera but this they nailed it. The rear camera takes some good images, you will able to see all the details without any issue, Vivo didn’t tired to over saturate the images as they did with earlier budget smartphones.

The phone also has dedicated night-mode which works great, now, there is no need to use GCam but still, Vivo has enabled the Camera to API, so if someone makes the GCam for Vivo V20 Pro 5G then there won’t be any problem to use that APK.

Also, the phone doesn’t have the quad-camera setup but Vivo manages to add macro mode into the ultra-wide lens. I just hope, next time, an instant of 2MP depth sensor, Vivo adds the Telephoto lens. Likewise, to use a 64MP sensor, you have to use the Pro mode because by default the camera takes 16MP images.

The 8MP ultra-wide sensor is also good, even at night, the ultra-wide lens manages to take good quality images with good details. Also, night-mode can be used to take ultra-wide shots which great feature to have.

At 30k with 5G, Vivo V20 Pro 5G is offering great camera setup, it’s not good as Pixel 4A but if you look at overall performance, Vivo V20 Pro 5G value for money device.

Performance and Software

ChipsetQualcomm Snapdragon 765G (8 nm)
GPUAdreno 620
CPUOcta-core (1×2.4 GHz Kryo 475 Prime & 1×2.2 GHz Kryo 475 Gold & 6×1.8 GHz Kryo 475 Silver)
OSFuntouch 11-based on Android 10
5GYES

Below Rs 30,000 price tag, there three phones which have 5G support including Vivo V20 Pro 5G, OnePlus Nord and Motorola G 5G. From those three phones, Motorola G 5G is the cheapest 5G phone you can get in India but this phone also has some cons as it’s cheapest out of all.

Talking about Vivo V20 Pro 5G, the phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC and it’s running on Funtouch OS 11-based on Android 10. Funtouch OS use to be complicated in the past but with the new update, the OS feels more like stock UI but still, it’s not good has Oxygen OS or Google’s Stock UI.

Like the design, UI depends on a user by user, so if you don’t like Funtouch OS then it’s better to go with OnePlus Nord but if you’re okay with Funtouch OS and if you can pay three thousand more for the good camera then Vivo V20 Pro 5G could be a good option.

Snapdragon 765G is a powerful processor, so there won’t be any problem while playing games or using the phone for social media. Also, keep in mind, the phone has only 60Hz screen refresh rate, the phone won’t be smooth as OnePlus Nord which has 90hz screen refresh rate.

Bottom line is, Vivo V20 Pro 5G has powerful SoC which can run all the game from Play Store without any problem. Don’t worry about performance but in the end, it all depend on whether you like Funtouch OS or not?

Audio and Call Quality

Vivo V20 Pro 5G has an only single bottom-firing speaker which is not that great, so if you don’t use earphone much and rely on smartphone speakers then you have to start using TWS earbuds as this phone doesn’t have 3.5mm audio jack. The phone has two noise-cancellation microphones, one on the top and second in on the bottom.

There won’t be any kind problem in calling, ever at a crowned place, another person on the call will able to hear you clearly. In short, speakers are not the best but there nothing to worry about call quality.

Battery Life

Battery Size4,000mAh battery (non-removable)
Charging PortType-C Port
Charging Speed33W fast charging support (33W charger will be included in the box)

The phone has small 4,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support and yes, the 33W charger is included in the box. The battery will last for day but you have to charge the phone at around 6PM everyday.

Battery life also depend on daily use, so if someone play games for six hours then battery will come around 0% very quickly.

“the battery life depends on your phone use if you every day play games for 6 hours then you need to charge a phone in every 6 hours but if you’re like me and don’t use the phone very often then it will last for a day or so”

Vivo V20 Pro 5G: Conclusion

Vivo V20 Pro 5G has powerful Snapdragon 765G SoC and great camera setup but the phone is priced at Rs 29,999 which is a bit for what Vivo is offering. Now if you want powerful performance and great camera setup then Vivo V20 Pro 5G is the best option but if you want better user experience and okay with good camera setup then it’s better to get OnePlus Nord at Rs 26,999.

Do I Recommend Vivo V20 Pro 5G?

Let’s first see, what’s the difference between OnePlus Nord and Vivo V20 Pro?

When you buy OnePlus Nord, you will get smother 90Hz screen, Oxygen OS, powerful Snapdragon 765G SoC, premium looks and you will save three thousand.

Now when you buy Vivo V20 Pro 5G, you will get the same powerful Snapdragon 765G SoC, great camera setup but you will lose out on Oxygen OS which is a huge deal for most of the people and also, you have to pay three thousand more to buy Vivo V20 Pro 5G.

Overall, if you really want 5G smartphone then it’s better to go with Motorola G 5G but if you want better looks, better cameras, better performance, better user experience and faster-charging support then pay four thousand more and get OnePlus Nord and from there, if you want better cameras then OnePlus Nord then there is Vivo V20 Pro 5G.

I know, it’s complicated but for now it’s not, just wait for Xiaomi and RealMe to launch their 5G smartphone.
