OnePlus 8 Review with Pros and Cons

OnePlus 8 Review

OnePlus 8 Series is launched in India and this year you can say, OnePlus is a premium brand. This year we got the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus Pro, both have its Pros and Cons but today let’s take a look at OnePlus 8 and find out what new OnePlus has to offer with this mid-Premium phone.

OnePlus 8 is available in three variant,

  • 6GB Ram + 128GB storage: Rs 41,999
  • 8GB Ram + 128GB storage: Rs 44,999
  • 12GB Ram + 256GB storage: Rs 49,999

Last year we had the OnePlus 7 which was priced at 33k and latter it was selling at 30k. So is OnePlus 8 overpriced or OnePlus has provided some top-notch specification, if I gave a direct answer, OnePlus has provided 5G this year and to give 5G in a phone, they have to use X55 modem and this modem is not cheap.

Let’s skip everything and jump into the Review…

Display Quality

OnePlus 8 Review

  • 6.55 inches display
  • FHD+ 1080*2400 Pixels
  • 90Hz screen refresh rate
  • Punch-hole notch

The OnePlus 8 comes with 6.55 inches display and still, its FHD+ display with the resolution of 1080*2400 Pixels 402PPI. Why OnePlus didn’t give QHD+ because OnePlus has also launched the OnePlus 8 Pro, they need to sell that Pro version too.

The best thing about OnePlus 8 is the display, I would say you’re getting best display quality below 50k in Android smartphone. Keep in mind, you can’t compare this display with any other QHD+ display because you can’t. The phone also features Reading Mode and Zen Mode, both of which debuted on the OnePlus 7.

This too has a 90Hz screen refresh rate and it’s flute-like OnePlus 7T but one thing you won’t find in OnePlus 7T is curved display or waterfall display. Here is the thing, some people like flat display and some likes curved display, so if you don’t like that huge curved display then give it a try, you gonna love it.

If you ask me, I bought OnePlus 7T instant of OnePlus 7T Pro. Overall, if you wanted a QHD+ display then this will disappoint you but believe me, you won’t see a huge difference yet if you’re tech lover then you will spot the difference.

OnePlus 8 Review

  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.0mm dimensions
  • 180g weight
  • Stereo Speakers

As I have said in many Mobile reviews, the design depends on a person by a person. For example, some people like pop-up selfie camera and some don’t, so I won’t say much about design. First, see the phone and if you like what OnePlus has produced then buy it or skip it.

OnePlus 8 Review

  • Snapdragon 865
  • X55 5G modem
  • LPDDR4X Ram
  • UFS 3.0 Storage

The OnePlus 8 is powered by all-new and powerful Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 Soc which is the best chipset available for the Android platform. The phone is also 5G ready that said, OnePlus has used Snapdragon X55 modem to give you 5G.

Fun fact, 5G is not available in India and I don’t think we will see 5G till 2022, and yet we have 5G support in every single flagship phone. So if you will keep this phone for the next two years then 5G will pay off but if you’re buying this phone because it has 5G then it’s not a good deal.

Let’s be practical, in the next two years we will see lots of new smartphones and new technology, so there is no point to invest your money on the phone just because it has 5G. One more thing, if the phone has 5G that means, mobile company will charge more money because, as of now we don’t have an Android chip manufacturer who has integrated 5G in the chip itself.

So if a mobile company wants to add 5G then they have to use the X55 modem and to use that company needs to buy those chips.

I think we just lose the track here, coming back to OnePlus 8. The OnePlus 8 is running on OxygenOS on top of Android 10 which is the best custom UI you can get in the Android platform, the phone is powered by Snapdragon 865 which means you will get the best possible performance.

Overall, there is nothing to worry about performance, you will get the best experience while playing games or consuming media contents.

OnePlus 8

We have the same rear design from OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro and also the same triple rear camera setup. An instant of a telephoto lens OnePlus went with a macro lens that no one uses, the telephoto lens would have a great choice.

On the rear side, we have 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 primary sensor with f/1.75 aperture, 2-megapixel macro lens, and 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The rear cameras can shoot videos up to [email protected] and have Super Slow Motion 1080p video at 240 fps, 720p video at 480 fps.

One the front side, it has a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 selfie shooter with f/2.45 aperture and this can shoot videos up to [email protected]

OnePlus did improve the cameras but it’s not a huge upgrade from OnePlus 7T. I will add some of the camera samples which were shot on OnePlus 8. I feel like, OnePlus 8 is a successor of OnePlus 7 and if it’s true then it’s a good upgrade but what about the price?

I mean, OnePlus has just added one extra macro lens and provided 90Hz display and launched at 42k, this is too much. I know, the phone has 5G and Snapdragon 865 but still, cameras are not good as 42k price.

Battery Life

OnePlus 8 Review

  • 4,300 mAh battery
  • Warp Charge 30T Fast Charging

The OnePlus 8 is packed with a 4,300 mAh non-removable battery with Warp Charge 30T Fast Wired Charging support and doesn’t have wireless charging support which is present on OnePlus 8 Pro.

I own the OnePlus 7T and it does not last for one day, I have to charge between 6 PM to 7 PM every day. This OnePlus 8 will give you around day battery life. Now keep in mind, battery life will depend on your daily use, so if you play lots of games, consume media then it won’t last for a day.

Here we go “the battery life depends on your phone use if you every day play games for 6 hours then you need to charge a phone in every 6 hours but if you’re like me and don’t use the phone very often then it will last for a day.”

Software & UI Experience

I don’t need to introduce the OxygenOS yet I just want to say one thing, OxygenOS is the best UI available on the Android platform, you will forget the stock UI, once you use OxygenOS.

  • Android 10
  • OxygenOS 10.5.3

The OxygenOS has covered everything from Dark Mode to display customization. Good thing is, it’s clean, and yes you won’t find any kind ads in UI which is a good thing because other companies like Realme and Xiaomi have implemented ads in their UI.

Overall, OxygenOS is clean, shooter, and fastest UI available on the Android platform.

Price and Availability

OnePlus 8 ReviewStill, if you want to buy OnePlus 8 then as of now we don’t have the India launch date but I think the phone will be available after the lockdown. OnePlus 8 is available in Glacial Green, Interstellar Glow, and Onyx Black color options.

  1. 6GB Ram + 128GB storage: Rs 41,999
  2. 8GB Ram + 128GB storage: Rs 44,999
  3. 12GB Ram + 256GB storage: Rs 49,999

Conclusion: Will you buy?

If you want 5G and new design in your next phone then yes you can buy OnePlus 8 but if you don’t care about 5G and design then I would say, it’s not worth investing Rs 41,999 in OnePlus 8. If you can add a little bit more then I would recommend you go with OnePlus 8 Pro because this has everything that premium smartphone should have.

  • Snapdragon 865 Soc
  • Good Display Quality
  • New Design

  • Little bit overpriced
  • No wireless charging
  • No Telephoto lens
  • Average Cameras
